It's One Answer You Should Know
I remember an interesting observation a great friend made several years ago during a conversation. He noted almost everyone he’s ever known knew what they would do if they won the lottery. Surprisingly, however, most were content to wait until they’d won the lottery before doing anything to change their lives! One of life’s greatest ironies is the fog of living all too often obscures life’s true potential and beauty. This is one lesson most fail to grasp until it’s too late.
As a professional life quality researcher, I work with clients wanting to experience lives that are more satisfying and fulfilling. It’s a common problem afflicting many today. Their lives have become mere existences of unrealistic expectations, responsibilities, and relentless goals – you know, pretty much living someone else’s dreams. Understandably, they want more from life’s experience. However, like most, they simply don’t understand how to accomplish it despite trying and failing many times in the past. By the way, my clients aren't what you might expect someone dealing with such challenges to be. They range from executives at some of the world's largest corporations and celebrities to business owners and house wives. The reason we're failing to thrive is that we’re never taught about how our lives are shaped and become what they are naturally. And, unless you’ve had this rare education, you don’t know how it all happens either.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a unique problem. Experts estimate that more than 85% of all people live their lives beyond its natural design. This statistic is devastating to life’s experience, happiness, and even health and relationships. Unfortunately, we live within a society that’s more interested in creating predictable consumers than happy campers. It’s a powerful message that’s undermining a culture desperately trying to find its place in the world. We go to school, get a good job, get the perfect smile and body, drive the luxury car, marry the perfect spouse, buy the McMansion on the hill, have the 2.3 children, get wealthy, and live happily forever after – at least until our pursuits kill us. However, looking more closely, we’re not living life as well as we would like others and ourselves to believe. Unemployment, social turmoil, and increasingly uncertain futures are only a few of the many inhibitors responsible for the statistics which are painting a grim picture of the lives we’re experiencing. In America alone, it’s estimated that more than two hundred million people are experiencing the devastating results from their unintended inability to meet goals society, others, and they have established for themselves. Have our lives become so demanding, emotionally unrewarding, and toxic that we’re losing our capacity and ability to thrive?
The good news is a quality life experience is something that’s created – not something we’re born into. You have the power make a powerful difference in the life you experience by taking the control of and responsibility for its design. This has become the mantra of a new generation discovering better lives by reimagining life’s possibilities and pursuing their passions. These folks are rethinking their true needs, passions, interests, what they want to do, and walking away from high-pressure jobs, extreme anxiety, and toxic existences for something altogether different – and far more rewarding. They’re reinventing themselves in some pretty remarkable ways. Oh yes – they’re happier than ever. It’s a growing movement began by making a simple commitment to experience more from life – and then do something about it.
In Reimagined: How amazing people design lives they love (and what they can teach you!, I explore individuals who live remarkable lives from the perspective of traits and characteristics they share with each other, and how they contribute to life’s experiences and their ultimate happiness. Perhaps the most interesting feature is almost all I’ve studied began with lives that had become unbearable before an individual decided to change them. It's often catastrophic events like divorce, the loss of a job, death, disease, or some other calamitous happening that triggers us to reevaluate the design and experience of our lives. One day, a client looked at me and said, “It’s too bad so many people wait until their world falls apart or they learn they’re about to die before they decide to reevaluate the design of their own life. It’s even more unfortunate that I was one of them.”
Those living remarkable lives today admit to learning how to live them more beautifully – it didn’t simply happen. It’s not about money, who your father is, or your social status. A more remarkable life is something anyone can experience – but must actively design and make happen. It’s something we should all do as teenagers, but rarely do or learn thanks to fate and hormones. However, exploring and reimagining your life is something you can and should do at every life stage. It offers truly remarkable benefits that make life and your world a much nicer place to be. So, what are you waiting for?
Life is a truly magical experience. Don’t waste yours living someone else’s dream. Make the commitment to explore, learn, and take back the control and design of a life you love.
So, what's next?
The idea behind living a life you love is one we should have drilled into our psyche from the moment we first walk. However, it’s not that simple. Basic understandings are required before we can become creative with our lives. Making thedecisions to explore your life and its experience is an excellent first step toward experiencing a more passionate and rewarding life experience. Most importantly – you can do it easily.
